The Commission has identified two key ways to address discrimination - Education and Compliance.
Education
- Developing and implementing educational initiatives to bring about a greater awareness and understanding of race relations.
- Identifying needs and educational resources, and developing training to increase equality of opportunity for all residents.
- Setting up a youth corp.
- Encouraging social interaction within all racial groups.
Compliance
- Monitoring workforce trends and identifying institutional patterns of discrimination.
- Organizing public forums with representatives of all interested organizations to discuss and find solutions to problems of racial animosities and prejudice.
- Consulting with employers and workers to determine their needs in complying with the Commission for Unity and Racial Equality Act, of 1994.
- Working with community groups, organizations, employers and employees to dismantle entrenched discrimination in the workplace and in the community.
Code of Practice
In addition to encouraging racial harmony and actions to eradicate prejudice, the Commission is concerned about gender and sexual bias in the workplace.
How You Can Help
No single organization can eliminate racism and prejudice from our community. Each of us has the responsibility of ensuring that persons are allowed to develop their full potential without being discriminated against on the basis of skin colour or ethnic origin.
You can help by:
- Eradicating prejudice in your own behaviour.
- Teaching your children tolerance and respect for others.
- Drawing attention to racial slurs and insults spoken by friends, co-workers and family.
- Treating your employer or employees fairly and justly without regard to race or ethnicity.
- Contacting the Human Rights Commission if you believe there is discrimination in a particular workplace or organization.
- Availing yourself of educational opportunities designed to sensitise you to race relations issues.
If we are to achieve a harmonious society free from bigotry and prejudice, we must all demonstrate a desire and willingness to fully participate in the development of that goal.
