In 1994, because of continuing frictions and inequities based on race and ethnicity, the former Government developed an Act that brought about the establishment of The Commission for Unity and Racial Equality (CURE). The Commission consists of twelve Commissioners who are drawn from various sectors of the community and are dedicated, to promoting equality of opportunity and better race relations between groups of different races. The Commissioners are supported by a staff of five officers, an Executive Officer, an Education Officer, a Survey Officer, an administrative assistant and a Receptionist.

Our Mission

Bermuda's social, political, economic and cultural landscape cannot be fully understood without addressing the role of race and ethnicity. Whilst great strides have been made in our society to ensure that inequalities have been addressed, it is recognized that we continue to strive to ensure that fairness and genuine equality of opportunity exists for all persons.

The mission of the Commission for Unity and Racial Equality is to:

  • Work towards the elimination of racial discrimination
  • Promote equality of opportunity.

We will achieve this through:

  • Education
  • Individual, corporate and community involvement
  • Fostering a climate of inclusiveness, sincerity and harmony.
Our Purpose

The primary purpose of the Commission, is to help dismantle the barriers that stand in the way of an open society free from racial discrimination. Since its inception, CURE has worked with community leaders, educators, religious groups, professional organizations, civic groups, students, and the business sector in educating persons on the denigrating effects of racism and racial discrimination within our society
